‘Indigenous Endangered Local Biodiversity’ – Nazrin Mammadova

It has been already half a year since Baku-based independent art platform Ta(r)dino 6 has been exhibiting contemporary art on the facade of its building located at Kichik Qala 58, Icherisheher. The third edition of the Art on the Wall project is ‘Indigenous Endangered Local Biodiversity’, a tryptic commissioned to artist Nazrin Mammadova. The work is dedicated to indigenous and endangered plants of Azerbaijan and its floral richness.

 

For the past few years Nazrin Mammadova explores and reflects on her

mission as a contemporary artist, ethical and aesthetic tasks that she has. In the context of  ‘Indigenous Endangered Local Biodiversity’ the artist rethinks the relationship between humans and the environment. The project is the first stage of a more extensive artistic research that studies permaculture as a way out of the current ecological crisis. Permaculture is a radical transformation of economic and social relations between people and nature and offers a harmonious integration of landscape and people. Nazrin believes that every conscious person should develop a personal responsibility for the restoration of the Earth. Permaculture proposes to move away from traditional forms to restoration of individual and community responsibility for self-improvement and change. According to Nazrin, “the living world is a unique and spectacular marvel: plants and animals dazzling in their variety interlock in a sustainable way with each other. We rely entirely on this finely tuned life support machine. And it relies on its biodiversity to run smoothly. Yet the way we humans live on Earth now is sending biodiversity into a decline, the natural world is fading, the evidence is all around us.”

Art on the Wall is organised in partnership with the Administration of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher”. Nazrin Mammadova’s ‘Indigenous Endangered Local Biodiversity’ is supported by the British Embassy Baku and Azerbaijan-UK Alumni Association (AUKAA). On May 20, 2021 Art on the Wall project was visited by UK DIT Minister for Exports and Parliamentary Undersecretary, Mr. Graham Stuart MP during his official visit to Azerbaijan, UK Ambassador in Azerbaijan, Mr. James Sharp and British Council Director Mr. Summer Xia. The work will be on display until the end of June.

Nazrin Mammmadova (b. 1989) Kutaisi born Baku based Azerbaijani interdisciplinary artist. Nazrin works in a variety of practices, including visual arts, new media art, and sound-design. This permits her to engage in a broader interdisciplinary inquiry in dialogue with other disciplines and systems of knowledge. Committed to art as a transformational practice, Nazrin Mammadova seeks to integrate synchronicities through a dialectical use of media. Seeing production as a process of putting herself in a particular place and then understanding it, Nazrin nurtures uncertainty and feeding the experimentalist experience.

 

Nazrin Mammadova has been to a number of international art residencies including the Delfina art Foundation, London, UK., KHOJ International, Goa, India amongst few and her works are collected for public and private collections in Russia, Kingdom of Jordan, England, UK, and Azerbaijan.
